    Download your Transaction History

    In E*TRADE, open your account activity and download the transaction history. Choose the CSV — the same page also offers a spreadsheet, and the CSV is the one that imports. It arrives named DownloadTxnHistory.csv.

    Widen the range and the activity type

    That download is filtered two ways — by date and by activity type — so open both up before exporting. Closes reach back to opens that may sit months earlier, and a file holding both sides needs no guessing.

    Drop the file into the Import Wizard

    Settings → Import Data, drag the file in. It's identified as E*TRADE automatically from its columns and their contents — no mapping step, no cleanup.

What comes acrossFrom one file

The contract, read from where it's actually named

E*TRADE writes the contract into the description and leaves the underlying in the Symbol column. On equities the two agree and it makes no difference. On index weeklies they genuinely differ — and reading the wrong one files a weekly under the monthly it isn't, which quietly merges two different positions. The description wins, because that's where the contract is.

Open or close, only when the file says so

Most rows state it outright, and a not-yet-settled fill states it as a suffix on its own description. When a row states neither, that's not a coin toss to be resolved by optimism — the running position for that contract decides, so a closing fill can't be booked as a brand-new short you never opened.

Expirations dated when they expired

An expiration and a cash-settled index settlement both post the next business day. Taking that posting date literally dates the close after the contract had already expired — a state no position can be in. Both are stamped at the expiry instead, which is when the position actually ended.

The whole cost of an option fill

The Commission column carries roughly half the charge on an option; the exchange and regulatory fee is folded into the cash and named nowhere. Since the cash amount is exact, the fill's whole cost is read from it — so break-even sits where it really sits, rather than a little closer than the truth on every single contract.

Equity fills keep the number the file states

The same trick would be wrong on shares, and that was measured rather than assumed: there the leftover is a fraction of a cent per share in both directions, which is price rounding, not a fee. Deriving a charge from it would invent one. So stocks keep the stated commission and options don't — each read the way its own rows behave.

A reinvested dividend stays a share purchase

E*TRADE writes a reinvestment as one row that pays the dividend and buys the shares at once. Booking it as cash would keep the income and lose the shares, leaving a position that grows for no visible reason. The shares are what gets recorded, and the cash half arrives on its own row.

What can't be imported is named, not dropped

Shares and contracts transferred in from another account state no price anywhere, and margin-to-cash journals come in matched pairs that cancel — booking either would invent something. Both are set aside, counted and named in the preview, so what's missing is one thing you can see and act on.

Do options come across, or just stocks?
Both, from the same file, along with the cash. E*TRADE names the contract in the Description rather than in the Symbol column — Symbol holds the underlying — so the contract is read from where it's actually written. That distinction matters on index weeklies, where the two genuinely differ, and it's what keeps a weekly out of the monthly's position.
What happens to expirations and index settlements?
They're closes, dated at the expiry. E*TRADE posts both the next business day, so taking the posting date at face value would date a close after the contract it closes had already expired. The expiry is what the position actually ended on, and that's the date used.
Why doesn't the commission match the file's Commission column?
Because on an option fill that column states only about half the charge. E*TRADE folds the exchange and regulatory fee into the cash amount and names it nowhere, so the whole cost is read from the exact cash the fill moved instead. Equity fills are the opposite case and keep the stated number — deriving there would turn ordinary price rounding into a fee that was never charged.
What about transfers in and margin-to-cash moves?
They're set aside, counted and named in the preview. Shares moved in from another account arrive with no price, so there's no cost basis to record — guessing one would buy you a position you never held. Margin-to-cash journals come in matched pairs that cancel, and booking one leg would show a deposit that never happened.
Why would a close have no matching open?
Usually because the open is older than the window you downloaded. The download is filtered by date range and by activity type, so widening both is what lets the two sides meet. Anything still unmatched is named in the preview with the position it needs, rather than being quietly booked against nothing.
